Gating your demos: Pros & Cons

Introduction

Gating a demo means placing a welcome screen in front of your content, requiring users to provide personal data or a password before accessing the HTML Environment. Gates can be created using the in-app Welcome Page, added via a custom link, or overlaid on an iframe with a custom form connected to your CRM.

Best Practice

While it's generally best to make demos as accessible as possible, there are certain scenarios where gating your HTML Environment might provide significant benefits. Consider the use case and weigh the pros and cons before deciding whether to gate your demos. Ungated demos give the audience direct access to demo content without having to provide personal information. Analytics are still gathered by the Reprise platform related to demo views and time spent in the demo, but all of this data is anonymous.

Pros and Cons of Gating Demos

Pros:

  • Lead Generation & Marketing Automation: Integrate your demo with marketing platforms like Marketo and HubSpot to streamline lead capture and follow-ups. Filling out a gated form creates a contact in your CRM, where you can track the screens viewed during the session.
  • Increase Lead Quality: By requiring personal information, you may attract more qualified leads, providing more valuable data for your sales team.
  • Better Targeting: Gated content gives you more opportunities to send prospects strategic pieces of content based on their behavior and interaction with the demo.
  • Premium Content Perception: Gated demos may signal to the audience that your content is high-value, encouraging more engagement.

Cons:

  • Decreased Accessibility: Gating your demo reduces the number of people who can access the content. This could potentially limit visibility and engagement with your demos. As an alternative, consider collecting personal information at the end of the HTML Environment for those interested in more details.
  • SEO Limitations: Because gated content isn't accessible to search bots, it provides little to no SEO benefit, which can limit your content’s discoverability.
  • Quality vs. Quantity: While gating may increase the quantity of leads, the quality of those leads might suffer. Some users may provide false or minimal information to bypass the gate.

Integrating Forms for Gated Demos

If you decide that gating your demo is the right strategy, integrating your form with HubSpot or Marketo allows for a seamless lead capture experience.

  • HubSpot Integration: By integrating HubSpot with your Reprise demos, you can gate your product tour and leave-behind HTML Environments. Users who fill out your form will be created as a contact in HubSpot, with the screens they viewed during the session recorded as well.

  • Marketo Integration: Similarly, the Reprise-Marketo integration enables you to gate your product tours and HTML Environments with Marketo forms. This also creates a contact in Marketo, allowing you to track user engagement during the session.
